FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DONNACONA, QC, October 20, 2005 - On October 19, 2005, at about 6:35 p.m., during activities in the gym in sector 240 of Donnacona Institution, a maximum security federal institution, a fight broke out between two inmates. The inmate who had been assaulted left the gymnasium and was handed over to staff and taken to the Health Care Centre for treatment of the injuries to his head and face.

The victim was transferred, under security escort, to an area hospital for further examination of his non-life-threatening injuries. He was operated on during the day.

His assailant was identified and transferred to the dissociation sector.

No staff were injured, and public safety was not compromised during the incident.

The Sûreté du Québec was notified, and charges of assault causing bodily harm could be laid.
