FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNLAWFULLY AT LARGE FROM THE FEDERAL TRAINING CENTRE

LAVAL, QC, October 26, 2005 - On October 26, 2005, Martin Mercier, an inmate at the Federal Training Centre, a minimum security federal institution, escaped from the location where he had been authorized to go earlier today, on a group temporary absence, for community service.

Police were notified and the Correctional Service of Canada shared with them all of the relevant information that could lead to the apprehension of this individual as quickly as possible.

Martin Mercier, who is 35 years old, has been serving a sentence of 11 years and 2 months since January 14, 1998, for robbery and fraud. He has a pale complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. He stands 5' 7" (170 cm) tall and weighs 159 lbs (72 kg).

The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an examination into the facts to determine the circumstances surrounding this case.

The authorities of the Federal Training Centre wish to point out that information concerning the escape can reported on a toll-free telephone line: 1-866-231-6495. Such information is treated confidentially and follow-up is provided by a Security Intelligence Officer.
