FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT PORT-CARTIER INSTITUTION

PORT-CARTIER, QC, October 27, 2005 - On October 26 at around 7:30 p.m., an inmate at the Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, was assaulted during the regular evening activity period. Having sustained multiple injuries, the inmate was first examined by the Institution's health care services and then sent under escort to the hospital outside for a more comprehensive examination. According to the latest reports, his life is not in danger and his condition is considered stable.

During the incident, no staff members were injured and public safety was never compromised.

The Sûreté du Québec was notified and is conducting an inquiry. The Correctional Service of Canada will also carry out an investigation in order to identify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
