FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT MONTÉE ST-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, December 10, 2005 - On December 10, 2005, Ghislain Dufour, an inmate of the Montée St-François Institution, a federal maximum-security penitentiary, passed away at the Cité de la santé hospital centre in Laval.

The inmate was transported by ambulance to the hospital centre on the night of December 10 when he was found to be in respiratory arrest. He was pronounced dead at approximately 2:55 a.m. The family was notified.

Ghislain Dufour, 44, began serving an 18-year sentence for attempted murder and manslaughter on December 12, 1997.

The coroner is required to investigate all cases of inmate death.

The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
