FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT PORT-CARTIER INSTITUTION

PORT-CARTIER, QC, December 14, 2005 - On December 14, 2005, around 3:06 a.m. Michel Gagnon, an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, died from natural causes at Sept-Iles hospital.

Michel Gagnon was 44 years old and, since June 25, 2004, had been serving a 3-year, 2-month and 7-day sentence for: failure to conform to a condition, breaking and entering with intent, possession of tools for breaking and entering, break-and-enter. It was his second federal sentence.

The coroner and the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
