FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DONNACONA, QC, January 10, 2006 - At approximately 10:50 a.m. on January 9, 2006, at a disciplinary hearing at Donnacona Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, an inmate assaulted a correctional officer, punching the officer in the face. The correctional supervisor conducting the disciplinary hearing was able to gain control of the inmate with the help of several officers. Another correctional supervisor was injured slightly during the incident.

The assaulted officer was seen by the institution's nursing staff and then sent to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The assailant was placed in segregation at Donnacona Institution and later transferred to a different institution, as required under the protocol in effect for this type of incident.

The Sûreté du Québec was notified and went to Donnacona Institution to take evidence from all those involved. Charges will be laid in this case.
