FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAINTE ANNE DES PLAINES, QC, January 13, 2006 - On January 12, 2006, following an internal investigation conducted by security intelligence officers in cooperation with staff responsible for the personal property of inmates, drugs were found in an inmate's personal effects at Archambault Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.
A total of 111 g of hashish with an estimated institutional value of $11,000 was seized. The drugs were found in plastic wrap under each sole of a pair of shoes.
The inmate was placed in segregation and charges of conspiracy to bring in drugs will be brought against him.
This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society by controlling inmates in a reasonable, safe, secure and humane manner. At the same time, the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and associated health and safety problems.
