CONTRABAND AT LECLERC INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, January 24, 2006 - On January 21, 2006, at approximately 13:30 hours, a visitor attempted to smuggle a large quantity of drugs into Leclerc Institution, a medium security penitentiary in Laval, during a community party.

The Sûreté du Québec arrested the visitor who had hidden the drugs on his person. The seized narcotics are valued at $16,400 inside the Institution, that is, 54 grams of hashish and 10 grams of heroin.

This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
