FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT THE REGIONAL RECEPTION CENTRE

SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, February 18, 2006 - On February 17, 2006, Paul Rousseau, an inmate at the Regional Reception Centre, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, was found hanging in his cell.

Institutional staff attempted to resuscitate the inmate until paramedics arrived. He was transferred to an external hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead. The inmate's immediate family was notified.

Paul Rousseau was 43 years of age and had been serving a three-year, three-month and 15-day sentence for growing cannabis since November 1, 2005.

A coroner's inquest will take place to determine the cause of death. The Sûreté du Québec and the Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
