FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LA MACAZA, QC, March 14, 2006 - At about 1:30 p.m. on March 12, 2006, following an internal investigation conducted by Security Intelligence Officers, a visitor was intercepted at the entrance to the visiting area at La Macaza Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary.
Approximately 14 grams of hashish and 0.5 grams of heroin were seized, with an estimated institutional value of $2,000. Substance testing and the case itself have been handed over to the Sûreté du Québec, and charges might be brought against the visitor.
This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control over the inmates under its responsibility. At the same time, the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health problems.
