LAVAL, QC, March 24, 2006 - On March 23, 2006, Sylvain Roy, an inmate of Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, was found hanged in his cell at about 11:45 a.m.
Institutional staff members worked to resuscitate the inmate until the paramedics arrived. The inmate was transferred to an external health care centre where he was pronounced dead by a doctor.
Mr. Roy was 40 years old and since 1988 had been serving a 25-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter. On statutory release since January 2005, he faced new charges in February 2006.
The coroner is required to investigate all cases of inmate death. The Sûreté du Québec and the Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
