FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT MONTÉE ST-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, March 25, 2006 - On March 24, 2006, Luc Saulnier, an inmate of Montée St-François Institution, a federal minimum-security institution, died at the Cité de la santé de Laval hospital centre.

The inmate had been transported to the hospital on March 23 as a result of serious health problems. Death was pronounced at about 10:55 p.m. Family members were with the inmate.

Luc Saulnier was 40 years old and, since January 18, 2006, had been serving a 4-year sentence for possession of a narcotic.

The coroner is required to investigate all cases of inmate death. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
