CONTRABAND AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

COWANSVILLE, QC, June 15, 2006 - On Sunday, June 11, 2006, 210 grams of hashish and 109 grams of marijuana were found near the fences of Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. This discovery followed information provided by various sources and findings made by correctional officers. The estimated value of these drugs inside the institution is $32,000.

The effort to combat the introduction of drugs into federal institutions is part of a broader initiative in which the Correctional Service of Canada, as part of its mission, contributes to the protection of society by exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control over the inmates under its responsibility while implementing its strategies for resolving issues related to drug use and the resulting health and safety problems.
