FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PORT-CARTIER, QC, August 2, 2006 - At around 6:30 p.m. on August 1, 2006, an inmate in the gym at Port Cartier Institution, a federal maximum security institution, took a baseball bat and broke windows and equipment located in this sector of the penitentiary. This situation was quickly brought under control by correctional officers, and the inmate was placed in isolation.
No staff members or inmates were injured, and public safety was not jeopardized at any point during this incident.
The institution's regular activities were temporarily suspended, as the Warden ordered that inmates be detained in their cells while the situation was assessed and a damage assessment was done.
