FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DRUMMONDVILLE, QC, October 6, 2006 - On October 6, 2006, at around 9:10 am at federal medium-security Drummond Institution, an inmate was beaten with iron bars by two fellow inmates in the recreation area. The motive for the assault is unknown at this time. The victim was transported to a hospital outside the institution to determine the extent of his injuries. The assailants are currently in segregation.

The institution is currently closed until further notice. The crimes against persons squad of the Sûreté du Québec is on site conducting a joint investigation with the Correctional Service of Canada. Charges may be laid against the inmates involved in the incident.
