CONTRABAND AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

DONNACONA, QC, October 25, 2006 - On October 20, 2006, in light of information gathered by intelligence officers at Donnacona Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, an inmate was intercepted on suspicion of having drugs in his possession. The inmate was returning to the Institution following a suspension of his statutory release.

When the inmate was informed of the suspicions against him, he agreed to be x-rayed, which revealed the presence of foreign objects. After spending time in a dry cell, he handed over two packages containing 47 grams of hashish and 74 pills of a potent narcotic.

The institutional value of the drugs is estimated at over $8,400.

The case will be handed over to Sûreté du Québec investigators.

The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line (1-866-355-DONA or (3662)) for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer provides follow-up.
