FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM MONTÉE SAINT-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, January 5, 2007 - On January 4, 2007, Gérard Galarneau, an inmate at Montée Saint-François Institution, a minimum-security federal penitentiary, escaped at around 18:30.

Police were informed immediately and the Correctional Service of Canada provided them with all relevant information and is giving them its full cooperation to apprehend this individual as soon as possible.

Gérard Galarneau, aged 50, has been serving a sentence of two years for theft since May 9, 2006. He is 180 cm (5'11") tall and weighs 105 kg (232 lbs.). He has grey hair, blue-green eyes, a light complexion, and multiple tattoos on his arms, back and chest.

The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this event.

The authorities at Montée Saint-François Institution are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the toll-free number at 1-866-210-5652. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
