FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTRABAND AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

DONNACONA, QC, January 8, 2007 - On January 3, 2007, a large quantity of drugs intended for institutional trafficking were found at Donnacona Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

At around 18:45, an officer on duty at the observation tower first saw an individual dressed in white, in the snow, fleeing toward the woods. A few moments later, the officer saw two inmates in the yard approach the area where some objects had been thrown.

Thus, several packets of drugs had been thrown over the fence of the exercise yard. The inmates had also managed to conceal the substances in their cells and on their persons. Searches were immediately conducted, resulting in the recovery of the contraband items and homemade weapons.

The analysis of the seized drugs revealed the presence of 150 grams of hashish, 200 grams of marijuana, and 101 ecstasy pills, with a total institutional value of $55,000. The inmates involved were placed in segregation and will be subject to disciplinary measures. The Sûreté du Québec will meet with many of them and charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking could be laid.

This new operation demonstrates the absolute importance that the Correctional Service of Canada places on countering institutional drug smuggling. Drug use and trafficking compromise the security of the institution and the safety of the inmates because such activities cause intoxication and debt. They are also two factors that greatly contribute to violence in correctional facilities.

The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line (1-866-355-DONA or (3662)) for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
