FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEATH AT PORT-CARTIER INSTITUTION
PORT-CARTIER, QC, January 9, 2007 - On January 8, 2007, at around 9:30 p.m., Serge Chayer, an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary, died of natural causes at the Port-Cartier health care and social services centre.
Serge Chayer, 47, had been serving an indeterminate sentence as a dangerous offender for sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and assault with a weapon since July 7, 2004.
A coroner's inquest and a Correctional Service of Canada investigation will take place to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
