FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, January 26, 2007 - On January 26, 2007, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Martin Bergeron, an inmate at the Regional Reception Centre, a maximum security federal penitentiary, was found hanged in his cell.

Institutional staff tried to resuscitate the inmate until paramedics arrived. He was transferred to Cité de la Santé hospital in Laval, where he died at around 2:50 p.m.

Martin Bergeron, aged 38, had been serving a two-year sentence since December for assault with a weapon.

The Sûreté du Québec and the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
