ASSAULT AT PORT-CARTIER INSTITUTION

PORT-CARTIER, QC, January 31, 2007 - On January 30, 2007, at approximately 1:45 p.m., an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, assaulted another inmate using a weapon made from a kitchen utensil. The victim was seriously injured. An officer fired a warning shot, which put an end to the incident.

The injured inmate was transferred under escort to an outside hospital for further examination of his non-life-threatening injuries.

The assailant was identified and transferred to segregation.

During the incident, no staff members were injured and public safety was never compromised. Activities have been partially resumed for the time being; full resumption of activities is foreseen for the very near future.

The Sûreté du Québec was notified and is conducting an inquiry. It is not yet known what, if any, criminal charges will be laid. The Correctional Service of Canada will also carry out an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
