FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAVAL, QC, March 30, 2007 - Eric Bélanger, an inmate at Montée St-François Institution, a federal maximum-security penitentiary, died yesterday, March 29, 2007, at 10:40 p.m. at the Cité de la Santé Hospital in Laval. The inmate had been feeling unwell earlier that evening. Penitentiary staff immediately performed resuscitation procedures until ambulance personnel took over.

The inmate's family was notified immediately.

Eric Bélanger, 39, was serving a life sentence that began on November 30, 1990, for second-degree murder.

The Correctional Service of Canada, in co-operation with the Bureau du coroner and the Sûreté du Québec, is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
