ESCAPE AND APPREHENSION AT SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES INSTITUTION

SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, April 3, 2007 - This morning at around 6 a.m., Pierre Léo Aubin, an inmate at Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines Institution (SAPI), a minimum-security federal penitentiary in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, turned himself in to Montreal Police after failing to return to the institution yesterday following an unescorted temporary absence.

Inmate Aubin was supposed to use the unescorted temporary absence to report for a medical appointment in Laval. He never arrived for his appointment and did not return to the Institution at the scheduled time.

Police were informed immediately of his failure to return and the Correctional Service of Canada provided them with all relevant information that could lead to the apprehension of the individual as soon as possible.

The inmate contacted SAPI this morning to turn himself in. He was located in Montreal, and Montreal Police took him into custody a short time later.

Pierre-Léo Aubin, 60, has been serving a life sentence since October 20, 1997, for second-degree murder.

The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Authorities at Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines Institution are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the toll free phone number at 1-800-348-1204. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer provides follow up.
