PORT-CARTIER, QC, August 13, 2007 - At around 9 am on August 10, 2007, at Port-Cartier Institution, a federal maximum-security penitentiary, an inmate was assaulted by another inmate with a cane. The situation was brought under control by correctional officers using spray irritants. No shots were fired.
The injured inmate was transferred under security escort to the Port-Cartier Health and Social Service Centre to stabilize his condition before being transferred to the Sept-Îles Health and Social Service Centre. He is now back in the Institution's health care centre in stable condition.
The assailant has been identified and is currently segregated in the detention area.
A staff member received minor injuries during the intervention. However, public safety was never compromised during the incident.
The Sûreté du Québec was notified. It is not known at this time what criminal charges, if any, will be laid. The Correctional Service of Canada will review the facts surrounding the incident.
