FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LA MACAZA, QC, September 12, 2007 - On September 8, 2007, an inmate's visitor in the possession of drugs was intercepted when she arrived at La Macaza Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.
The intervention, the result of an internal investigation, led to the seizure of hashish with an institutional value of $1,400. Two inmates have been placed in administrative segregation as a result of this intervention, and a police investigation, which may result in charges, is underway.
This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
