FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE FIGHT AT PORT-CARTIER INSTITUTION

PORT-CARTIER, Quebec, November 8, 2007 - At around 6:45 p.m. on November 7, 2007, an inmate at Port Cartier Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, was injured by other inmates.

The incident occurred in the Institution's gymnasium during an activity engaged in by a number of inmates. Staff responded immediately and raised the alarm.

First aid was administered quickly at the Institution's health service centre. The inmate was then taken to an area hospital for additional care. His condition is not serious.

The inmates who attacked him have been placed in segregation, and the Sûreté du Québec has been informed of the incident. The Institution is investigating the facts surrounding the incident and charges may be laid.

Public safety was not jeopardized at any point during this incident.
