DISTURBANCE AT DRUMMOND INSTITUTION

DRUMMONDVILLE, Quebec, July 3, 2008 - At around 8:00 p.m. on July 2, 2008, inmates at Drummond Institution, a medium-security penitentiary, refused to return to their cells. They began a peaceful demonstration in the outside courtyard.

Following negotiations between both parties to manage the incident safely and effectively, the inmates returned to their cells at around 12:25 a.m. on July 3. The entire incident unfolded peacefully.

For the time being, the institution is in lock-down. Staff are now working to restore normal operations at the penitentiary.

In accordance with routine procedure, CSC will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
