UPDATE - DISRUPTIONS AT DRUMMOND AND COWANSVILLE INSTITUTIONS

LAVAL, Quebec, July 4, 2008 - The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) wants to provide an update on the disruptions that have been taking place since July 2, 2008, at Cowansville and Drummond Institutions. Activities in both institutions are limited. The atmosphere is calm and discussions are ongoing between management and inmate representatives.

Other than the proactive intervention from management at Archambault Institution to counter a possible movement of solidarity by some of the inmates, no significant disruption was reported at the 11 other federal penitentiaries in Quebec.

CSC acknowledges the importance of informing the public of any major institutional incidents. CSC will provide an updated news release with any significant developments.

In closing, since the recent disruptions at these institutions seem to be tied to the total smoking ban in federal correctional facilities, we invite you to consult the Correctional Service of Canada Web site at: http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/media/ntl-eng.shtml.

The safety of employees, inmates and the public remains a priority for CSC. Rest assured that this issue is being given all the attention it needs.
