FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM MONTÉE ST-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

LAVAL, Quebec, July 5, 2008 - On July 5, 2008, Michel Bernier was reported missing from Montée St-François Institution, a federal minimum-security institution.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has been informed, and Correctional Service Canada will continue to cooperate with the SQ to locate the offender as quickly as possible.

Michel Bernier is serving a life sentence for murder, first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit forgery, forgery, uttering forged documents, conspiracy to traffic in substances, robbery, and armed robbery.

Anyone who has information about Mr. Bernier's whereabouts is asked to contact the Sûreté du Québec.

Correctional Service Canada will investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape and will take the measures necessary.
