FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SMALL FIRE AT LA MACAZA INSTITUTION

LA MACAZA, Quebec, July 21, 2008 - At about 12:15 p.m. on July 21, 2008, a small fire was discovered in the building housing the laundry facilities and shop at La Macaza Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. Emergency response measures were implemented for inmates and staff.

Firefighters from the Rivière-Rouge Fire Department arrived on the scene a few minutes after the alarm was raised and took control of the building. This small fire apparently started in a garbage can.

At no time were the health and safety of the public, employees and inmates at risk.

CSC will conduct an investigation of this incident, as is the procedure under similar circumstances.
