CONTRABAND AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

DONNACONA, Quebec, November 14, 2008 - On November 13, 2008, at Donnacona Institution, a maximum security penitentiary, an inmate returning to the Institution following the suspension of his parole was found to be carrying 978 grams of hashish.

The enhanced contraband prevention measures of the Correctional Service of Canada's Drug Strategy enabled officers to detect and seize narcotics with an institutional value of nearly $140,000. The case was transferred to the police and charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking may be laid against the inmate.

The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line, 1-866-355-DONA or (3662), for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
