FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTRABAND SEIZED AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

COWANSVILLE, July 16, 2009 — On July 15, 2009, at medium security Cowansville Institution, 80.6 g of marijuana was seized during a routine search of an inmate after visitors had left. The institutional value of the drugs is estimated at $8,000.

Any individual involved in criminal activity may be subject to criminal charges or disciplinary measures.

The Correctional Service of Canada has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders and visitors, the use of ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

Cowansville Institution wishes to remind the public that there is a toll free number (1 866 220 7782) for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loansharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
