CONTRABAND AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

Cowansville, Quebec, September 11, 2009 – On September 10, 2009, three balls containing ecstasy, tobacco, and smoking-related items were found as a result of staff vigilance near the perimeter of Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.

The items seized have an estimated institutional value of $11,880.

Any person involved in criminal activities may face criminal charges or disciplinary measures.

CSC uses a number of tools on a continuous basis to prevent the circulation of drugs in the institutions. These include searching offenders, visitors, institutions, and cells, as well as using ion scanners and detector dogs.

Cowansville Institution wishes to remind the public that a toll-free telephone number (1-866-220-7782) is available for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loansharking. This information is kept confidential and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
