Port-Cartier, Quebec, September 14, 2009 – At about 7:30 p.m. on September 11, 2009, a fight broke out between two inmates in a range of Port-Cartier Institution, a federal maximum-security penitentiary. One of the inmates sustained an injury to his jaw and was escorted to the institution’s health care centre. Given his condition, the inmate was transferred to hospital in Sept-Îles and then to the Enfant-Jésus Hospital in Quebec City. The other inmate was placed in segregation following a medical examination.
No staff member was injured, and public safety was never compromised during the incident.
The reason behind the fight is not known at this time. The institution is investigating the facts surrounding the incident. The Sûreté du Québec was notified of the incident as well.
