CONTRABAND DISCOVERED AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

Cowansville, Quebec, October 22, 2009 - On the evening of October 16, 2009, a package containing tobacco was found near the perimeter of Cowansville Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary. The institution's regular activities were suspended to perform a thorough search of the sector. In total, 13 balls containing 1,569 grams of tobacco were found. The institutional value of the contraband is estimated at $25,000.

As part of its Transformation Program, CSC is taking firm steps to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions, provide a safe environment for all inmates and staff, and encourage inmate accountability. CSC is also working in partnership with police to prosecute inmates and outside offenders who attempt to bring contraband into institutions.

A toll free number (1 866 220 7782) is available for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loansharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
