FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT LECLERC INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, October 24, 2009 - On October 23, 2009, Carl Bédard, an inmate at Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, was transported by ambulance to the Cité de la Santé hospital in Laval after he was found in his cell in respiratory arrest. As of October 24, 2009, the exact cause of death had not yet been determined.

A physician at the hospital pronounced the inmate dead at approximately 6:08 p.m. on October 24.

Carl Bédard was 26 years old and had been serving a first federal sentence for breaking and entering (x9), mischief (x3), possession of break-in instruments (x2), conspiracy, possession of property obtained by crime, theft over (x2), theft under, failure to comply, fraud under, and obstructing justice.

All cases involving the death of an inmate are reported to the police and coroner for their investigation. Correctional Service Canada will also examine the circumstances of this incident.
