Port-Cartier, Quebec, November 10, 2009 - On November 7, 2009, Martin Gosselin, an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, died following a lengthy illness. His general health quickly deteriorated while he was in palliative care, and he was taken to Sept-Îles hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the physician on duty.
Mr. Gosselin, 43, was serving a sentence of eight years and six months for sexual assault, breaking and entering, and forcible confinement. His sentence would have ended in 2013. Attempts to locate his family members have been unsuccessful to date.
As in all cases involving an inmate death, the police and the coroner were called in to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause(s) of death.
