FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ALTERCATION AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

Cowansville, Quebec, November 23, 2009 – On November 21, 2009, at about 12:50 a.m., an inmate at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, sustained injuries to his nose caused by another inmate. The incident occurred in a cell.

The inmate was transported to an area hospital. He was returned to the Institution a few hours later.

The Institution is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will take the measures necessary to improve its practices and to prevent and reduce the frequency of similar incidents.

Public safety was not, at any time, compromised. Our priority remains the security of the Institution and staff and public safety.
