FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH AT COWANSVILLE INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, December 18, 2009 — Simon Lepage, an inmate at Cowansville Institution, a medium security penitentiary, died on the night of December 18, 2009. He was found unconscious in his cell and was taken by ambulance to Cowansville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

Simon Lepage, 29, was serving a two-year sentence for carrying a weapon and uttering threats.

As in all cases involving an inmate death, the police and the coroner were called in to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause(s) of death.
