DRUG SEIZURE AT LECLERC INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, January 13, 2010 – On January 8, 2010, a large quantity of drugs was seized through the vigilance of staff at Leclerc Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.

Searches conducted by the dog handler led to the discovery of three balls buried under snow; these balls were likely thrown over the institution’s perimeter fence.

They contained 225 grams of marijuana and 135 ecstasy pills, with a total institutional value of $32,250.

As part of its Transformation Program, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is taking firm action to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions, provide a safe environment for all inmates and staff, and encourage inmate accountability. CSC is also working in partnership with police to prosecute inmates and outside offenders who attempt to bring contraband into institutions.
