DEATH AT LA MACAZA INSTITUTION

La Macaza, Quebec, February 2, 2010 - Reginald Snowden, an inmate at La Macaza Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, was transported by ambulance to the Rivière Rouge de L'annonciation hospital after being found unconscious in his cell. Although the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, the death is not considered suspicious.

The inmate was pronounced dead by a hospital doctor at 9:37 a.m.

Réginald Snowden, 66, had been serving an indeterminate federal sentence because of his dangerous offender status for various crimes, including escape from lawful custody and indecent assault.

As in any case involving the death of an inmate, the police and coroner are required to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be looking into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
