Port-Cartier, Quebec, March 15, 2010 – At about 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2010, an inmate was injured following an altercation with two other inmates at Port-Cartier Institution, a federal maximum-security penitentiary. The inmate, who sustained an injury to the face, was taken to the institutional health unit for first aid and then transferred to hospital in Sept-Îles. When he returned to the institution that night, he was confined to the health unit.
The two inmates suspected of taking part in the assault were placed in segregation. The three inmates’ cells have been sealed pending an investigation.
No staff member was injured, and public safety was never compromised during the incident.
The reason behind the assault is not known at this time. The institution is investigating the facts surrounding the incident. The Sûreté du Québec was notified of the incident as well.
