FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH OF INMATE FROM LA MACAZA INSTITUTION

LAVAL, Quebec, March 29, 2010 – On March 28, 2010, André Girard, an inmate from La Macaza Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, was found dead at the Cité de la Santé hospital in Laval.

Mr. Girard, 66 years of age, had been serving a nine-year sentence for sexual assault, extortion and assault. His next of kin have been notified of his death following a long battle with illness.

The police and the coroner were notified of the death. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be investigating the circumstances surrounding this event.
