LA MACAZA, QUEBEC, July 29, 2010 – This morning, at 8:30 a.m., preventive security officers at La Macaza Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary, noticed that an inmate had suffered lacerations. The inmate was immediately escorted to the Centre de santé et de services sociaux Antoine-Labelle for treatment. His injuries were not life threatening.
To improve its practices and prevent and reduce the number of similar incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada continues to work with police to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and take the necessary measures.
The Institution is currently in lockdown and visits have been suspended.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
