FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Inmate Injured at Port-Cartier Institution

Laval, Quebec, August 2, 2010 – At 9:10 p.m. on July 30, 2010, at Port Cartier Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, an inmate was attacked by another inmate in the gym area. The victim was taken to an outside hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries to the face.

The Correctional Service of Canada is currently conducting an internal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The injured inmate has returned to the institution and is waiting to be transferred to a Quebec region hospital for treatment. The inmate who instigated the attack has been placed in segregation. No staff members were injured during the incident, and public safety was not compromised.
