FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Laval, Quebec, August 11, 2010 - On August 9, 2010, employees in the visiting area of Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, intercepted seven grams of heroin brought in by a visitor. The woman was then arrested by the Sûreté du Québec. The institutional value of the drugs is estimated at $7,000.
As part of its Transformation Program, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is taking strong action to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions and to provide a safe and secure environment by encouraging inmates to assume more responsibility. CSC is also working in partnership with police to prosecute inmates and outside offenders who attempt to bring contraband into institutions.
Info-Crime (450-664-6702) is a free telephone number available for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loansharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
