Laval, Quebec, August 25, 2010 - On August 21, 2010, two individuals who came to visit inmates at Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, were intercepted with over 220 grams of hashish. The visitors, who were to attend a community activity, were noticed first by the dog handler and then questioned by institutional preventive security officers.
Sûreté du Québec officers were called in and arrested both individuals. The institutional value of the drugs seized is over $22,200.
As part of its Transformation Program, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions in order to provide a safe and secure environment for all and to promote rehabilitation. CSC is also working in partnership with police forces to prosecute outside violators and inmates who attempt to bring contraband into institutions.
Info-Crime (450-664-6702) is a free telephone number available for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault or loansharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
