FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT ON INMATE – REGIONAL RECEPTION CENTRE

Ste-Anne-des-Plaines Institution, Quebec, October 23, 2010 – At around 2:30 p.m. on October 23, 2010, a fight broke out between four inmates in the outside yard of the Regional Reception Centre, a multi-level federal penitentiary. One assault victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim was cared for at the institution. Both attackers are currently in segregation. At no time was the safety of staff or the public compromised.

The institution ceased part of its operations. The reason for the assault remains unknown for the time being. Sûreté du Québec has been informed of the incident.

The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The security of institutions and the safety of employees and individuals in these institutions remain top priorities in the federal correctional system.
