FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT MONTÉE ST-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

Laval, Quebec, November 24, 2010 – On November 23, 2010, Robert Girard, an inmate at Montée St-François Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Laval, died at the Cité de la Santé hospital. The cause of death appears to be natural causes.

Girard, 58, had been serving a sentence of 4 years and 6 months for sexual offences since 2008. His next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving an inmate death, the police and the coroner were called in to investigate. The Correctional Service Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
