CONTRABAND INTERCEPTION AT THE FEDERAL TRAINING CENTRE

Laval, Quebec, December 1, 2010 – On November 30, 2010, a large quantity of drugs and other contraband intended for trafficking in the institution was discovered near the fences surrounding the Federal Training Centre, a minimum-security federal penitentiary in Laval.

The two packages contained 52 booklets of rolling papers, three speed tablets, 34 tobacco pouches and bulk tobacco equalling about 16 pouches, 95 g of marijuana and two cigarette lighters. The institutional value of this seizure is $19,000. An investigation is underway to identify suspects who may be involved.

As part of its Transformation Program, CSC is taking all steps necessary to prevent contraband from being brought into institutions and to provide a safe environment by encouraging inmates to assume responsibility for achieving the objectives of their correctional plans. CSC is also working in partnership with police forces to prosecute outside violators and inmates who attempt to bring contraband into institutions.

The Federal Training Centre wishes to remind the public that there is a toll-free number, 1‑866‑231‑6495, for reporting any pressure exerted on a visitor by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan-sharking. This information is kept confidential and will be followed up by a security intelligence officer.
